Surveys and assessments

Field surveys help ecologists assess the impact of a development on threatened species, populations of a species or ecological communities.

Field surveys provide information for:

  • an assessment of significance when a proposed development is likely to impact threatened species
  • a species impact statement, which is needed for a development on land containing critical habitat or that will impact threatened species, under the NSW Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016 or the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979
  • assessments under the BioBanking Scheme to calculate biodiversity impacts and gains.

Definitions

Definitions for threatened species, populations of a species and ecological communities are listed under the NSW Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016.

The publications below set out best practice field survey methods for threatened species, populations of a species, or ecological communities on sites proposed for development or other activities.
