Correa lawrenciana var. genoensis (a shrub) - endangered species listing

The Scientific Committee, established by the Threatened Species Conservation Act, has made a Final Determination to list the shrub Correa lawrenciana var. genoensis Paul G. Wilson as an ENDANGERED SPECIES in Part 1 of Schedule 1 of the Act. Listing of endangered species is provided for by Part 2 of the Act.

NSW Scientific Committee - final determination

The Scientific Committee has found that:

1. Correa lawrenciana var.  genoensis Paul G. Wilson (family Rutaceae) is described by M. F. Duretto (1999) in Walsh, N. G. and Entwisle, T. J. (eds). Flora of Victoria. Vol. 4. p. 176, Inkata Press, Melbourne, as a: Shrub to 2 m high. Leaves ovate, 3-6 cm long, to 4 cm wide, obtuse, obtuse to rounded at base, fawn-tomentose beneath. Flowers usually solitary, axillary, peduncle c. 1 cm long (terminal bracts minute and deciduous); pedicel c. 1cm long; calyx somewhat urceolate, dentate to slightly undulate, 9-12 mm long (including the lanceolate-acuminate lobes to 3-4 mm long), green, glabrescent; corolla narrowly cylindric, 17-25 mm long, yellow-green (often reddening with age).

2. Within NSW, Correa lawrenciana var.  genoensis is known from a single location along the Genoa River in the vicinity of the Victoria/New South Wales border .The species also occurs along the Genoa River on the Victorian side of the border.

3. The total population size in NSW is estimated to be approximately 200 individuals.

4. The taxon is not known to occur within any conservation reserves.

5. Given the restricted distribution of Correa lawrenciana var.  genoensis and its small population size in NSW, it is susceptible to catastrophic events and localised extinction .

6. In view of the above the Scientific Committee is of the opinion that Correa lawrenciana var.  genoensis Paul G. Wilson is likely to become extinct in nature in New South Wales unless the circumstances and factors threatening its survival or evolutionary development cease to operate.
