The park is eventually expected to encompass all the land zoned as Regional Park under the Sydney Regional Environmental Plan No. 30 – St Marys, an area of approximately 900 hectares, and is located 5 kilometres north-east of Penrith and 12 kilometres west of Blacktown in western Sydney. This plan of management will apply to those lands and other land once acquired under the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1974 for addition to the park.

The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Act 1974 requires that a plan of management be prepared for each reserve. A draft Plan of Management for the Wianamatta Regional Park was placed on public exhibition from 9 March 2007 until 1 July 2007. The submissions received were carefully considered before adopting this plan.
