Callistemon linearifolius (a shrub) - vulnerable species listing

The Scientific Committee, established by the Threatened Species Conservation Act, has made a Final Determination to list Callistemon linearifolius (Link) DC., a shrub, as a VULNERABLE SPECIES on Schedule 2 of the Act. Listing of vulnerable species is provided for by Part 2 of the Act.

NSW Scientific Committee - final determination

The Scientific Committee has found that:

1. Callistemon linearifolius has been described in Harden 1991 (Flora of NSW Vol. 2) as: a shrub 3-4 m high, with linear to linear-lanceolate leaves 8-10 cm long, and 5-7 mm wide with an acute apex, thickened margins, and distinct lateral veins. Inflorescences are spikes with red filaments, usually 9-10 cm long, c.50 mm diameter, not leafy, with rachis pubescent at flowering. Capsules are c. 7 mm diameter. Flowers spring - summer. Grows in dry sclerophyll forest on the coast and adjacent ranges.

2. Callistemon linearifolius has been recorded from the Georges River to Hawkesbury River in the Sydney area, and north to the Nelson Bay area of NSW. For the Sydney area, recent records are limited to the Hornsby Plateau area near the Hawkesbury River.

3. Callistemon linearifolius was more widespread across its distribution in the past. The spread of urbanisation is the most likely cause of its decline. There are currently only 5-6 populations in the Sydney area, of the 22 populations recorded in the past. Three of these are reserved in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, Lion Island Nature Reserve, and Spectacle Island Nature Reserve. Further north it has been recorded from Yengo National Park.

4. The plant numbers in any one population are largely unknown but there are a number of locations with low population numbers.

5. The species is threatened by continuing loss of habitat due primarily to urban development. There is also a high risk of local extinction due to low population numbers.

6. In view of 3, 4, and 5 above the Scientific Committee is of the opinion that Callistemon linearifolius is likely to become endangered unless the circumstances and factors threatening its survival or evolutionary development cease to operate, and is therefore eligible for listing as a vulnerable species.
