Pomaderris notata (a shrub) - vulnerable species listing

The Scientific Committee, established by the Threatened Species Conservation Act, has made a Final Determination to list the shrub Pomaderris notata S.T. Blake as a VULNERABLE SPECIES in Schedule 2 of the Act. Listing of vulnerable species is provided for by Part 2 of the Act.

NSW Scientific Committee - final determination

The Scientific Committee has found that:

1. Pomaderris notata (family Rhamnaceae) is described in Harden, G.J. & Murray, L.J. (eds) (2000)  Supplement to Flora of New South Wales Volume 1, University of NSW Press, page 54 as: a shrub to 2 m high, stems shortly tomentose. Leaves elliptic, 3 - 6 cm long, 20 - 30 mm wide, apex rounded to acute, sometimes mucronate; upper surface glabrous, green; lower surface shortly tomentose, whitish to pale grey with the thickened margins and veins slightly rusty. Flowers creamish, in terminal panicles; bracts 4 - 5 mm long, falling very early. Sepals not persistent in fruit. Petals absent. Capsule not seen; hypanthium and sepals shortly tomentose, sepals pilose towards apex.

2. The species occurs in Queensland and reaches its southern distributional limit in New South Wales. In New South Wales it is known from rocky basalt ranges in montane heaths and scrubs, or in depauperate rainforest. It has been collected from the McPherson and Tweed Range areas of far northern New South Wales.

3. In NSW Pomaderris notata is known from five locations, including Mount Warning National Park, Mebbin National Park and Limpinwood Nature Reserve. Total population size is thought to be small.

4. Due to a restricted distribution and small total population size, the species is threatened by demographic and environmental stochasticity.

In view of the above the Scientific Committee is of the opinion that Pomaderris notata S.T. Blake is likely to become endangered unless the circumstances and factors threatening its survival or evolutionary development cease to operate.
