Sydney Harbour Scenic Walk project: Update March 2022

Construction of the track commenced in late 2021 and will be completed in sections.

Walking track construction

Construction of the new walking track has continued since the last update with the first section of track work completed between Cobblers Beach Road and the Inner Fort, Middle Head. Additional track work has been installed between the Inner Fort and Outer Fort, with work also going ahead near the 1801 Fort.

Safety upgrades at the fortifications

Upgrades including structural supports and new balustrade has been installed at the Obelisk Bay gun emplacement. This fortification was constructed at the same time as the Georges Head gun emplacement, which held the twin-6 pounder gun, and observation tower.

While the new track will allow visitors to explore the interior of the Georges Head gun emplacement with new interpretation, at Obelisk Bay the track will lead visitors over the top of this emplacement, offering stunning views of the harbour toward Vaucluse and Watsons Bay. Visitors can expect different experiences at these sites.

Chowder Bay Road improvements

Work will commence toward the middle of the year on safety and drainage improvements to Chowder Bay Road. The work will include a new drainage swale on the western edge of the road and the upgrade of existing pipe culverts.

Work will also include safety enhancements to the car parks that extend along the road and pedestrian links to the forthcoming walking track section from Obelisk Beach to Georges Head casemate and observation tower.

Further updates regarding this work will be provided in the coming months.

Walking track signage and interpretation

Middle Head is one of the most significant historical sites on Sydney Harbour, combining Aboriginal cultural heritage with colonial military history dating back to the early 1800s. A comprehensive interpretation package has been developed that will inform walkers and other visitors about the interesting and unique history of the site.

Signage and interpretative information or devices will be rolled out during the year.
