Keraudrenia corollata var. denticulata in the Hawkesbury Local Government Area - endangered population listing

The Scientific Committee, established by the Threatened Species Conservation Act, has made a Final Determination to list the population of Keraudrenia corollata var. denticulata in the Hawkesbury Local Government Area as an ENDANGERED POPULATION on Part 2 of Schedule 1 of the Threatened Species Conservation Act. Listing of endangered populations is provided for by Part 2 of the Act.

This species is now known as Keraudrenia corollata var  denticulata C.T.White.

NSW Scientific Committee - final determination

The Scientific Committee has found that:

1. Keraudrenia corrolata var. denticulata (Steetz) Druce (Family Sterculiaceae) is a rusty-tomentose shrub 1-2 metres high. Leaves ovate or elliptic, usually 8-12 cm long, 30-40 mm wide, margins toothed, strongly wrinkled and pubescent to scabrous with veins impressed above; petiole 3-8 mm long. Cymes few flowered, shorter than leaves. Calyx white to pinkish; lobes acute. Capsule 10-15 mm diam., very hairy; carpels distinct and separating in fruit. Flowers spring.( Flora of New South Wales Volume 1, Harden 1990).

2. Keraudrenia corrolata var. denticulata is not listed on Schedule 1 of the Act, so that populations are eligible for listing.

3. An isolated population of Keraudrenia corrolata var. denticulata occurs in Hawkesbury Local Government Area, disjunct from other populations and at the southern limit of its geographic range. There are collections from Colo River area between Lower Portland and Morans Rock and near Gees Lagoon. Known subpopulations are very small

4. Keraudrenia corrolata var. denticulata has been recorded in tall open forest with Eucalyptus deanei in a gully above the floodplain, and on road verges. All occurrences in the Hawkesbury Local Government Area are associated with the endangered Sydney Coastal Riverflat Forest.

5. Threats include weed invasion, road maintenance, isolation/fragmentation, grazing and rural land clearing. The population is not known to occur within a conservation area.

6. In view of 2, 3 & 4 above, the Scientific Committee is of the opinion that the habitat of the population of Keraudrenia corrolata var. denticulata in the Hawkesbury Local Government Area has been so drastically reduced that it is in immediate danger of extinction, that it is not a population of a species already listed in Schedule 1, and the population is disjunct and at or near the limit of its geographic range. Consequently, the population is eligible to be listed as an Endangered Population.
