Significant progress has been made over the past month with the western end of the seawall. The final western section of planter box at the top of the seawall was poured in mid-July and the first section of promenade slab, located behind this planter box, was poured on 25 July.
These concrete pours have completed the major structural elements of the western half of the seawall. Only minor concrete pours for the stair treads and promenade slab, grit blast finishes, handrails and landscaping works remain to complete the western portion of the project.
The contractor's work on the eastern half of the seawall continues to progress, with bleachers being poured progressively and the mid-level terrace immediately east of the central stairs poured in mid-July. At the eastern end of Shark Beach, construction of the capping beam which connects the tops of the foundation piles beneath the future vehicle and pedestrian ramps is underway.
The contractors are commencing grit blasting to the finished concrete elements, which will continue throughout August. This will produce the final finish to the bleachers, mid-level terrace and promenade slabs.
Once again, inclement weather and showers during the first week of July impacted the progress of works. In addition, the structure around the dressing shed tunnel entrance and eastern ramps has involved a difficult and complex build resulting in slow progress for this section. The contractors are continuing to work diligently to complete this section safely and in accordance with stringent quality requirements.
NSW Public Works and the contractor continue to closely monitor the works program and sequencing of activities to account for impacts from adverse weather and construction complexities. Completion is now scheduled for early September 2024. These updates will continue to provide information as the construction works progress and can also be found on the project webpage.
Visitor access
Shark Beach will remain closed to visitors until the completion of the project. In the interest of everyone’s safety, we kindly request that all visitors refrain from entering the construction site, be it through fencing or water. This area is not safe for visitors.
We appreciate and understand that the project delays are very frustrating, but we are committed to delivering the project to specification so that this public infrastructure meets its design life of 100 years. All parties involved are working hard to achieve overall completion as soon as possible.
