Eucalyptus castrensis (a tree) - rejection of vulnerable species listing
The Scientific Committee, established by the Threatened Species Conservation Act, has made a Final Determination to reject a proposal to list the mallee Eucalyptus castrensis K. D. Hill as a VULNERABLE SPECIES on Schedule 2 of the Act. Rejection of a nomination is provided for by Part 2 of the Act.
NSW Scientific Committee - final determination
The Scientific Committee has found that:
1. Eucalyptus castrensis K.D. Hill is known only from a single stand in the Singleton Training Area near Broken Back repeater station, despite considerable survey effort over the past 10 years. (T Peake pers. comm.). It has not been recorded in any Conservation Reserve.
2. Eucalyptus castrensis is locally dominant over a restricted area of about three hectares.
3. Due to the localised extent and small size of the population at the only known location and the potential for damage by unauthorised activity and potential for future change in land tenure, the Scientific Committee is of the opinion that Eucalyptus castrensis K. D. Hill is likely to become extinct in nature in New South Wales unless the circumstances and factors threatening its survival or evolutionary development cease to operate, and that, therefore, the species satisfies the criteria for listing as endangered.
4. In view of the above the Scientific Committee has decided to reject the proposal to list Eucalyptus castrensis K. D. Hill as Vulnerable and proposes to make a Preliminary Determination to support a proposal to list Eucalyptus castrensis K. D. Hill as Endangered.
