The Barrington Tops National Park and Barrington Tops State Conservation Area feral horse management plan outlines our management actions to remove feral horses to address their impacts on the park. It delivers on a high priority action in the Barrington Tops National Park, Mount Royal National Park and Barrington Tops State Conservation Area plan of management.
The objective of the Barrington Tops National Park feral horse rehoming program is to contribute to meeting the requirements of the park's feral horse management plan. This plan seeks to aid environmental recovery and conservation by removing all feral horses from the national park as far as practicable.
Rehoming eligibility and application process
Only individuals or groups approved by NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service will be eligible to receive feral horses through the program.
To apply to become registered as an approved rehomer and request feral horses from Barrington Tops National Park:
- you must read the Domestication (rehoming) guidelines
- you must meet the eligibility criteria outlined in the guidelines and complete the online application, including all required information.
- submit a Barrington Tops feral horse rehoming request form.
NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service will not process incomplete applications.
If you are approved as a registered rehomer you will be required to pay a $100 application fee per horse requested.
Applications close 17 January 2025
The online application and rehoming request form must be complete and submitted by Friday 17 January 2025.
Other considerations
- Horses will be offered to rehomers when their application to be registered as a rehomer has been approved and there are horses available.
- Registered rehomers will be required to pay a $100 application fee per horse requested. This fee is due when NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service notifies rehomers that their application to become a rehomer has been approved.
- If you receive horses through the program, you will be required to complete an annual program return for all horses received for the previous financial year in accordance with the guidelines.
- To minimise transport times, in the first instance, preference will be provided to registered rehomers whose approved rehoming address is within the Hunter region.
- All previously approved rehoming individuals and organisations must complete the new application form.
- Applicants approved for the Kosciuszko National Park Wild Horse Program will be considered approved for the purposes of the Barrington Tops National Park Program, however, you must submit the Barrington Tops feral horse rehoming request form by Friday 17 January 2025.
