National heritage-listed areas in national parks

The National Heritage List contains heritage places of outstanding significance to the nation. We manage 9 places that are included on this list.

 

Gondwana Rainforests of Australia

Gondwana Rainforests of Australia, extending across north-east New South Wales and south-east Queensland, includes the largest areas of subtropical rainforest in the world.

Greater Blue Mountains

Greater Blue Mountains is one of the largest most intact tracts of protected bushland in Australia.

Kurnell Peninsula

Kurnell Peninsula in Kamay Botany Bay National Park, which is where Captain James Cook first landed in 1788, an event that led to the British settlement of the Australian continent.

Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, Lion, Long and Spectacle Island Nature Reserves

Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, Lion, Long and Spectacle Island Nature Reserves have high biodiversity, cultural and historic heritage value. Australia’s second-oldest national park, Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, has been a conservation area since 1894.

North Head

North Head in Sydney Harbour National Park and its heritage-listed North Head Quarantine Station, which occupies a 30-hectare site. This site was added to Sydney Harbour National Park in 1984.

Old Great North Road

Old Great North Road in Dharug National Park is one of 11 places that make up the Australian Convict Sites World Heritage listing. It is Australia's best surviving example of an intact convict-built road.

Royal National Park and Garawarra State Conservation Area

Royal National Park and Garawarra State Conservation Area on the southern fringe of Sydney. Royal National Park was Australia's first national park and, along with the adjacent Garawarra State Conservation Area, is an important reserve for plants and animals of this region.

Warrumbungle National Park

Warrumbungle National Park near Coonabarabran in central New South Wales, with its spectacular rock formations shaped by the erosion of an ancient volcano, is a haven for numerous native plants and animals.

Willandra Lakes Region

Willandra Lakes Region in the far south west of New South Wales is an ancient system of lakes formed over the last 2 million years and is believed to contain the world's oldest known cremation site.
