The Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016 commenced on 25 August 2017. Under section 14.11 of the Act, the Minister for Environment and Heritage is required to review the Act after 5 years of operation to ensure that its policy objectives remain valid and that its terms are appropriate for securing those objectives.

The overarching objective of the Act is to maintain a healthy, productive and resilient environment for the greatest wellbeing of the community, now and into the future, consistent with the principles of ecologically sustainable development.
