A river is declared to be a wild river when its biology, landscape and water flows are in a substantially unmodified condition. The Upper Brogo River and its tributaries were assessed and found to support a diverse range of freshwater plants and animals, and the river's condition had not been compromised by minor disturbances within the catchment.

The Brogo subcatchment is within the Bega catchment in south-east New South Wales. The Brogo subcatchment is immediately upstream of the Brogo Dam and provides water for the Bega district’s town and irrigators.
