Light to Light Walk: update August 2021

The Plan of Management Amendment has been adopted.

The Minister for Energy and Environment has recently adopted the Ben Boyd National Park and Bell Bird Creek Nature Reserve Plan of Management Amendment. This amendment enables upgrades to the Light to Light walking track and associated visitor facilities. Works proposed include realigning some sections of the walk to the coast and building new hut accommodation and campgrounds along the way.

A total of 205 submissions were received during the public exhibition of the Draft Amendment and the Draft Light to Light Walk Strategy. We would like to thank everyone who took the time to review and comment on the plans.

A public exhibition report is available on the project web page that summarises the submissions received and National Parks and Wildlife Service response. Based on this feedback, some changes were made to the Light to Light Walk proposal, including formalising a campground at Mowarry Point. These are outlined in the updated Light to Light Walk Strategy.

Light to Light Walk Stakeholder Reference Group

To ensure the views and issues from a broad section of the community are considered in developing the Light to Light Walk, we are establishing the Light to Light Walk Stakeholder Reference Group. The group will provide input into the planning and construction phase of the Light to Light Walk.

We will be inviting representatives from a range of stakeholders and organisations in conservation, tourism, recreation, local government and Aboriginal community to participate in this reference group.

Next steps

  • Independent environmental, cultural and historic heritage assessments for the project are being carried out. A draft of the Review of Environmental Factors will be available for public comment in the coming weeks, and we will notify you when the exhibition period commences.
  • To keep up to date with the Light to Light Walk visit the project webpage.
