The Charcoal Tank Nature Reserve is one of only three reserves in New South Wales containing the critically endangered ecological community “Mallee and Mallee-Broombush dominated woodland and shrubland, lacking Triodia, in the NSW South Western Slopes Bioregion”.

It also contains 2 other endangered ecological communities and over 165 birds have been recorded in the reserve, including 26 threatened species.
