Angophora inopina (a tree) - vulnerable species listing

The Scientific Committee established by the Threatened Species Conservation Act has made a Final Determination to list the tree Angophora inopina K.D. Hill as a VULNERABLE SPECIES on Schedule 2 of the Act. Listing of vulnerable species is provided for by Division 2 Part 2 of the Act.

The Scientific Committee has found that:

1. Angophora inopina K.D. Hill was described in 1997 by K.D. Hill (Hill, K.D. 1997. New Species - Angophora and Eucalyptus (Myrtaceae) from New South Wales. Telopea 7, 97 - 109).

2. A. inopina is a small tree to 8 metres tall, often multi-stemmed. Adult leaves are moderately glossy, coriaceous in texture, opposite, mid-green but paler on the lower surface, lanceolate to broad-lanceolate, acute, 4 - 11 cm long, 0.8 - 2.6 cm wide, petioles robust, flattened, 0.5 - 0.8 cm long. Inflorescences are compound and terminal, peduncles and pedicels setose and terete. Mature buds are setose, ribbed, globular to pyriform, 5 - 7 mm long and 5 - 7 mm diameter. Fruits are setose, vaguely ribbed cup-shaped to pyriform, more or less truncate, 11 - 15 mm long, 9 - 12 mm in diameter and usually 3-locular. The valves are broadly triangular, obtuse enclosed and steeply raised.

3. A. inopina is a member of the A.bakeri complex. It is most similar to A. crassifolia, from which it is distinguished by the broader leaves and shorter petioles.

4. A. inopina is found in open dry sclerophyll woodland of Eucalyptus haemastoma and Corymbia gummifera with a dense shrub understorey. The woodland occurs on deep white sandy soils over sandstone, often with some gravelly laterite.

5. The current known distribution of A. inopina is restricted to the Wallarah catchment between Charmhaven and Wyee.

6. The known distribution covers an area which is being rapidly developed.

7. In the light of 5 and 6 above the Scientific Committee is of the opinion that A. inopina is likely to become endangered unless the circumstances and factors threatening its survival or evolutionary development cease to operate, and thus meets the criteria of Section 14 of the Threatened Species Conservation Act for listing as a vulnerable species.
