Glossy black-cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus lathami lathami), Scotts Head population - rejection of endangered population listing
The Scientific Committee, established by the Threatened Species Conservation Act, has made a Final Determination to reject a proposal to list the Scotts Head population of the Glossy Black-Cockatoo Calyptorhynchus lathami lathami (Temminck, 1807) as an endangered population on Part 2 of Schedule 1 of the Act.
NSW Scientific Committee - final determination
1. The Scientific Committee has carefully considered all submissions received as a result of public exhibition of the Preliminary Determination.
2. The Scientific Committee recognises that the consistent recording of the Glossy Black-Cockatoo Calyptorhynchus lathami lathami at Scotts Head represents one of the largest assemblages of the species on the NSW coast and hence is of significant conservation value.
3. The mobility of the Glossy Black-Cockatoo on the NSW Coast makes definition of a population difficult, and the available evidence suggests that the Scotts Head birds occur within a wider population whose boundary is currently undefined.
4. For the wider population the necessary criterion for listing as an endangered population of being in "immediate danger of extinction" has not been demonstrated. Long term survival of the population will require conservation of appropriate habitat, including both feed trees and nesting sites.
5. In light of 3 & 4 above the Scientific Committee has decided to reject the proposal for listing as an endangered population.
