Euphrasia ciliolata (a herb) - vulnerable species listing

The Scientific Committee, established by the Threatened Species Conservation Act, has made a Final Determination to list Euphrasia ciliolata W. R. Barker a herb, as a VULNERABLE SPECIES on Schedule 2 of the Act. Listing is provided for by Part 2 of the Act.

NSW Scientific Committee - final determination

The Scientific Committee has found that:

1. Euphrasia ciliolata was first described in 1982 by Barker, in the Journal of the Adelaide Botanic Gardens, 5: 285 - 287.

2. Euphrasia ciliolata (Scrophulariaceae), is described by Barker (in Harden, G., 1992, Flora of New South Wales Vol. 3. UNSW Press, Kensington, page 588) as: an erect annual herb 19 - 45 cm high, branches with short recurved white non - glandular hairs in 4 rows. Upper stem leaves usually ovate to elliptic, sometimes oblong - elliptic, mostly 5.5 - 11 mm long and 2.4 - 4.5 mm wide, margins with 1 - 3 pairs of teeth. Racemes more or less lax, usually 16 - 26 flowered. Calyx 3 - 6 mm long, scabrous. Corolla 10.5 - 16.5 mm long, blue or deep purple to mauve, occasionally midline of lower lip yellow; tube 6 - 9.8 mm long, glabrous at base. Stamen filaments usually glabrous, anthers 1.3 - 2 mm long, anterior connectives glabrous, others hairy. Capsule 4 - 6.8 mm long, bristly in upper half. Flowers Jan. - May.

3. The species is restricted to the northern tablelands of NSW, mainly in the Barrington Tops area. It is found in grassy sites, near bogs or swamps or in subalpine woodland.

4. Two of the twelve known locations contain over 90% of the total population. Seven locations occur within conservation reserves including Barrington Tops and Werrikimbe National Parks.

5. Many of the locations are threatened by the invasive weed Cytisus scoparius (broom). Other threats include rooting by pigs and grazing.

6. In view of 3, 4 & 5 above the Scientific Committee is of the opinion that the species is likely to become endangered in nature in NSW unless the circumstances and factors threatening its survival or evolutionary development cease to operate.
