Sydney Harbour Scenic Walk project: update August 2022

Construction of the new walking track continued despite the extreme wet weather experienced in Sydney from November to July.

Walking track construction

Construction of the new walking track continues despite the extreme wet weather experienced in Sydney from November to July. The section between Cobblers Beach fire trail and the Outer Fort has been completed, and the section from the 1801 gun emplacement to Obelisk Bay is nearing completion.

In late June, a helicopter operation delivered track materials to locations along the Obelisk Beach to Georges Head section of track, and construction has commenced on this section.

One of the key features of the new walking track will be a new bridge across the historic defensive ditch. The detailed designs for this feature are being finalised, and fabrication and installation are scheduled for the second half of 2022.

Chowder Bay Road upgrades

Improvements to roadside drainage along Chowder Bay Road are expected to commence later this year and will take approximately 3 months to complete. The improvements will assist in reducing the occurrence of potholes and soft road edges.

Other improvements include new drainage culverts to enhance drainage from the western edge of the road, upgrades to the existing car parks, including pedestrian links to the new walking track, and a new pedestrian connection between the park and Harbour Trust lands at Georges Head.

The road is expected to remain open during most of these works, but there will be some unavoidable impacts and delays on road users. Additional details will be available once the works program is confirmed.
