Kamay Botany Bay National Park: update October 2024

The new visitor amenities building at Commemoration Flat has opened.

New Commemoration Flat amenities open

Construction of the new visitor amenities building at Commemoration Flat has been completed, and the building opened in August 2024 for use by park visitors.

The new accessible amenities block has been constructed out of precast concrete panels, replacing the previous corroded steel amenities building with a new structure better suited to the coastal environment. Australian hardwood timber battens have been incorporated as a privacy screen and to help the building blend into its surrounding natural setting. A new disability-compliant pathway connects the amenities block to the existing Commemoration Flat car park.

The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service worked with the Gujaga Foundation and community artists to develop the stingray artwork used within one of the precast panels. Reference to a flowering wattle has been featured via bright pops of yellow on the new building's entry doors.

Construction contract awarded for Visitor Centre and Cricket Pitch Precinct

In February 2024, NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service appointed NSW Public Works to procure and manage the construction contractor to build the new Visitor Centre and Cricket Pitch Precinct package of works, encompassing the majority of the remaining Kamay2020 project scope.

A tender process was conducted throughout mid-2024 for these works, with the contract awarded in early October 2024 to construction firm Gartner-Rose Pty Ltd.

In addition to the construction of the new Visitor Centre, the work to be completed will revitalise the Cricket Pitch precinct, with the expansion of the existing Cricket Pitch car park to provide 34 additional car spaces, and the replacement of the current Cricket Pitch amenities with a new building similar to the recently completed Commemoration Flat amenities.

The Freshwater Stream will be rehabilitated by removing concrete piped sections and restoring its natural creek bed, with a new bridge crossing over the rehabilitated watercourse to connect the Cricket Pitch precinct to the new Visitor Centre.

Major service infrastructure between the new Visitor Centre and the park entrance will be replaced to supply the new building with upgraded water and electrical supplies, replacing aged and undersized current services.

Provisions for improved access will be incorporated in all works, with new Disability Discrimination Act compliant pathways and parking to be delivered as part of the project.

Impacts on visitation

Construction of the Visitor Centre and other visitor facilities is scheduled to commence in mid-October 2024, and to be completed in 2026.

The Visitor Centre is expected to be closed for the entire construction period, but some smaller portions of the works will be staged and progressively completed during 2025. Details of the works program will be released as this becomes available.

Major precincts will be closed during the construction phase, and signage and fencing will be in place during this time. Some work areas will be relocated progressively as work elements such as paths and inground services are constructed.
