The department can make a joint management agreement with another public authority to manage, regulate or restrict an action that jeopardises the survival of a threatened species, population or ecological community.
However, before an agreement can be made, submissions from the public and the NSW Threatened Species Scientific Committee must be invited and considered.
Current agreements
The only current example is the shark meshing joint management agreement between the former Office of Environment and Heritage (as of 1 January 2024 the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water) and the Department of Primary Industries.
This agreement aims to minimise the impact of shark meshing on marine mammals, birds and reptiles.
