Lepidosperma evansianum (a perennial herb) - vulnerable species listing
The Scientific Committee, established by the Threatened Species Conservation Act, has made a Final Determination to list the perennial herb Lepidosperma evansianum K.L. Wilson as a VULNERABLE SPECIES on Schedule 2 of the Act. Listing of vulnerable species is provided for by Part 2 of the Act.
NSW Scientific Committee - final determination
The Scientific Committee has found that:
1. Lepidosperma evansianum (Cyperaceae) is a tufted perennial herb 20-55 cm high, with a short rhizome. The leaves are slightly shorter and 0.7-1.5 mm wide. The narrow, erect inflorescence is oblong to ovate in outline, 5-7 cm long, c. 1 cm diameter. The spikelets are more or less numerous and densely clustered, 4-6 mm long. It grows on wet sandstone cliff faces in the Blue Mountains in the central tablelands of New South Wales (K.L.Wilson in Harden (1993) Flora of NSW Vol 4: p313).
2. The species is currently known from 3 locations (at Blackheath and Wentworth Falls), where it occurs in a very restricted habitat. It is recorded to be rare to occasional to common at these locations. It is difficult to assess the number of individuals at each location because of the rhizomatous habit of the species.
3. All known sites occur within Blue Mountains National Park, although they are near the boundary of the reserve.
4. The main threats to Lepidosperma evansianum are urban runoff, weed encroachment and track maintenance.
5. In view of 2, 3 & 4 above the Scientific Committee is of the opinion that the species is likely to become endangered unless the circumstances and factors threatening its survival or evolutionary development cease to operate, and is therefore eligible for listing as a vulnerable species.
