Acacia chrysotricha (a tree) - endangered species listing

07 Jul 2000

The Scientific Committee, established by the Threatened Species Conservation Act, has made a Final Determination to list the tree Acacia chrysotricha Tind. as an ENDANGERED SPECIES on Part 1 of Schedule 1 of the Act. Listing of endangered species is provided for by Part 2 of the Act.

NSW Scientific Committee - final determination

The Scientific Committee has found that:

1. Acacia chrysotricha Tind. (Fabaceae) is described in Harden, (1991) Flora of NSW Vol. 2 as an erect tree, usually 8-16 m high; bark finely or deeply fissured, grey to red-brown; branchlets more or less terete, densely hairy. Leaves with rachis 7-14 cm long, with 12-20 pairs of pinnae, jugary and interjugary glands absent; pinnae 1.5-5 cm long, each with 8-23 pairs of pinnules; pinnules linear to oblong, recurved, 3-4.5 mm long; 1-1.5 mm wide, hairy. Heads 15-30 flowered, golden yellow, 20-60 on an extended axillary inflorescence; axis 4-15 cm long; peduncles 4-6 mm long, hairy. Pod sometimes curved more or less flat, 6.5-10 cm long, 4-6 mm wide, margins thickened, dark brown to black, with dense very long hairs; seeds longitudinal; funicle expanded towards seed. Flowers July and Aug.

2. Acacia chrysotricha is known from only 2 locations, south of Bellingen in northern New South Wales. One of the sites occurs in wet sclerophyll forest within the Jaaningga Nature Reserve (previously Newry State Forest and Newry Golden Wattle Forest Preserve) and the second site is within a Eucalyptus plantation within Gladstone State Forest.

3. Only some 1200 plants are currently known. The site in Gladstone State Forest is very small with only some 30 plants.

4. The species is threatened by weed encroachment and logging activities. It may also be under threat if fire management where it occurs is incompatable with the conservation of the species.

5. In view of 2, 3 & 4 above, the Scientific Committee is of the opinion that the species is likely to become extinct in nature in New South Wales unless the circumstances and factors threatening its survival or evolutionary development cease to operate.
