Progress
Construction of the new amenities building at Barrenjoey Headland have been progressing well during the past few weeks:
The final concrete pour is scheduled for early November. This will involve flying the concrete from Resolute Picnic area over Pittwater to the headland.
In the interior, the concrete flooring has been finished. Waterproofing and tiling is almost complete.
The exterior features timber battens and screening at the front of the building. These battens will be painted and installed around mid-November.
Gabion basket walls form part of the landscaping around the new building. These are large galvanised mesh baskets filled with rocks to provide a strong and permeable structure. The piles for the gabion baskets were completed at the end of October with construction of the walls in early December.
Impacts on visitation
Access to Barrenjoey Headland and the lighthouse will remain open during the construction period and access trail upgrade works. However, visitors may experience changes and/or restrictions to access including:
- increased vehicle movements to the headland and lighthouse on the beach and service road
- pedestrian access retained throughout construction via Smugglers Track
- closure of the Barrenjoey access trail Monday to Friday to allow contractors to access the site and undertake maintenance work
- no visitor access around the south-eastern part of the lighthouse and below the Head Lightkeepers Cottage. This area will be fenced for construction and storage of materials
- temporary closures of the headland or parts thereof during helicopter operations to deliver materials. This is necessary to manage load limits on the access trail.
During construction, visitors can continue to use the temporary amenities which will be decommissioned and removed when the permanent amenities are operational.
Visitors should check current alerts on the National Parks and Wildlife Service webpage when planning their visit and follow the direction of onsite signage.
