Koala survey of the Mid North Coast assessment area
In 2023, the NSW Government committed to establishing a Great Koala National Park on the Mid North Coast. To provide high-quality data on the koala populations in the 176,000 ha of state forest that is being considered for inclusion in the proposed Great Koala National Park, the Koala Science Team within the NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water developed a survey for the area.

The Koala Science Team surveyed 169 sites across the study area during the period of 2 April to 12 July 2024. The study area encompasses both state forest and national parks. The survey effort undertaken to count koalas in the study area was significant and involved more than 4,000 km of drone flight, at night, by a team of 26 drone pilots.
Overall, findings show substantial spatial variation in the abundance and distribution of koalas in the assessment area.
