National Science Week is Australia's annual celebration of science and technology. The theme for 2024, Species Survival - More than just sustainability, aims to highlight the importance of science in ensuring the survival of different species in an ever-changing world.

Science is integral to the Saving our Species program.

To mark National Science Week, let's look at some of our recent Saving our Species research projects. The aim of our research projects is to:

  • build our knowledge about threatened plants, animals, fungi, ecological communities and their threats
  • inform on-ground management for the conservation of these species and communities.

Our research projects often involve partners such as universities, other government agencies, botanic gardens, private industry, and Aboriginal and community organisations.

Our research is helping to answer key questions and support better conservation outcomes for threatened species and ecological communities.

Research needs and knowledge gaps have been identified for threatened species, ecological communities and key threatening processes managed through the Saving our Species program.
