A collaboration between Port Macquarie Landcare, Koala Smart and the NSW Koala Strategy is supporting school children in Port Macquarie to learn about koalas and participate in conservation efforts.

Landcare volunteers guide students on how to collect gumnuts, extract the seeds and propagate them into koala food trees, on their school grounds. Once the seedlings reach planting size, they are transferred and planted in suitable areas, creating essential koala habitat.

By combining hands-on learning activities with engaging classroom presentations, the program educates students about the importance of koala habitat and native tree species. The program integrates environmental education into the classroom to meet the NSW curriculum for middle and upper primary students. As the children develop their appreciation for growing things and deepen their understanding of koalas, they become environmental advocates for the next generation.

The ‘Aussie Kids Growing Koala Food Trees’ program is an example of how communities can come together to make a positive impact on the environment and local wildlife species, by nurturing both trees and young minds.

Currently offered in the Hastings region, the program has the potential for expansion to new communities. Schools located in Birpai Country (Hastings region) interested in participating are encouraged to email [email protected] with an expression of interest. There are no costs to the schools involved and all necessary equipment is provided.
