Programs, legislation and framework

The key pieces of legislation that identify and protect NSW threatened species, populations and ecological communities are the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016 and its regulations.

The new Act began on 25 August 2017 and replaces the Threatened Species Conservation Act 1995.

The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water administers the NSW Biodiversity Conservation Act.

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development is responsible for protecting threatened fish and marine vegetation.
